Check out our brand new bamboo stairs, we love them!
We are breathing a sigh of relief this week as our new bamboo stairs have been installed and they look amazing! We decided to do something different for the stairs which was a bit of a risk as to how it would turn out. Instead of using the same bamboo flooring material on the stairs that we are using for the rest of the house floors, which would show a lot of seams due to how the flooring is installed together, we used bamboo Plyboo instead. By using the Plyboo, we can have continuous pieces for the stair treads and back which gives it a more modern look. The risk we took was that the Plyboo is not an exact match to our bamboo flooring, see the pic above. The Plyboo is darker but the there are similar color variations running through both. The good news is we absolutely love how it looks and in fact think it is more of a feature now because it stands out from the floor. Let's go up the stairs for a better look!
Our awesome floor installer came up with the design for the landings as you go up the stairs. We did not have enough uncut Plyboo to do each landing section as a whole piece and because of this, it is another great feature on it's own. I love the square pattern with the bamboo lines running different directions on each square.
The blue tape shows the separation between the Plyboo and the regular bamboo floor that has also been installed. For the bamboo floor we used Teragren Synergy Strand in Chestnut.
Our neighbors used it in their house and we loved the warmth and look of it. It's not too dark and not too light, just perfect for a Scandinavian.Modern.Industrial.Beach Cottage!
The master bedroom, we still have to choose a stain for the exposed wood ceiling beams.
Heading back out into the hall to Finn's bedroom...
He now has new flooring too! We used Wicanders Cork Flooring in his bedroom for something different. It is a nice soft flooring material that is perfect for a little boy to play on plus we love the natural look of it. We think it will go well with his surf.tiki.ocean.scientific themed bedroom!
Our downstairs floors will be finished on monday and then baseboards and our kitchen appliances can be installed. The exterior stucco is now completed so our front and backyard decks can be built next week. We have a warm, sunny day in the forecast for today so I will be sure to take some pics of the house exterior. Yesterday we enjoyed really great weather at the beach as well.
It was a really nice break from the house projects for a few hours. Of course there are still projects on the list for today, cleaning out the downstairs bedroom so that our original Douglas fir wood floors can be refinished and Mr. Bamboo is in the process of sealing our butcher block counters in the kitchen. Check back soon for more progress pics! We are looking forward to a swimming break this afternoon in Grandpa How and Kerby's swimming pool at their condo rental in Solana Beach. It's so nice to have some family in town and it was really fun to give them a tour of our house yesterday.
See you soon!

Beautiful!

Love your blog. We're getting Teragren Synergy Strand in Chestnut installed in our upstairs soon and I was wondering how you like it one year later. Any pros/cons you can share? Is that a cork underlayment I see in the pictures?
ReplyDeleteHi there, thanks for your comments. We love our Teragren Synergy Strand floors, they are very durable and have held up well. They were glued down directly to the plywood subfloor. The cork floor you are seeing is the floor in our son's room, the only room in our house that we did not do bamboo flooring. Even though the synergy is super durable, it can still scratch so we have used felt pads on everything including our vacuum cleaner! Also be careful using rugs/protective paper over the bamboo floors that may be in direct sunlight, as the bamboo flooring can fade a bit over time and underneath those items it would remain darker. We had that problem with paper that was left on our floors during construction to protect the floors in heavy traffic areas. After four months though all the floors have aged into an even color thankfully. Overall we are very happy with our bamboo floors, good luck with your project!
